Like sport, business is competitive. The winners don’t just succeed by chance. They prepare better, plan meticulously and execute with precision. They are clear on their strategy, can see the big picture, don’t get sidetracked and monitor the detail. What’s more they do all this whilst creating an environment in which their staff go the extra mile. These winners like Federer and Woods don’t just happen. Talented, yes, but the ability to win consistently over a long period is more difficult and that is precisely why we must ‘bother’ with Executive Coaching. You just cannot achieve as much alone and even the outwardly clearest of business thinkers will have regular moments of doubt.
A tennis match lasts a few hours, a golf round a little longer, but we expect our key business decision makers to perform exceptionally, day in and day out, without support.
If Roger Federer or Tiger Woods started a season without a coach we would think they had lost the plot. This is not because of perceived weaknesses in their respective games but because in sport at least coaching is considered crucial to ensure top performance. These combinations of outstanding natural ability and a professional coaching team are taking sport to new heights. Why is it therefore that we have only recently realised in Britain that our leading business men and women should see it appropriate to avail themselves of such support?

Most of us have heard the often quoted phrase of “Tough times don’t last, tough people do!” so, what does it take to be one of these “tough people”? Somehow as leaders we feel we ought to have the answers, and as followers, we look up to leaders to provide us with the answer. A catch 22 we have created which perpetuates the pressure within our businesses and on ourselves.
Leadership does not mean that we alone are thinking hard on the next golden nugget that will come out of the wings and mists to provide THE ANSWER to the problem. What it does mean is that we need to use the combined energy and resources around us to achieve that which we cannot conceive of on our own.
Which brings me to ponder on the types of questions we might have to ask to get rich conversations and trusting relationships to develop.
What should we be thinking about now?
What do I know about my business, but have not said out loud or admitted to anybody?
Am I continuing to invest in my key relationships and networks?
How can I be more visible?
Which facts do I need to confront?
What are my priorities?
What questions do I need to ask, of whom?

Annelie has taken on a mad challenge by cycling from Casablanca to London -1,118 miles in 16 days. She completed the journey with her husband David and son Chris, and three friends. The team have raised over £12,000 which goes directly towards ongoing research into MND – a devastating neurological disease which kills five people every day in the UK.
“I know we are mad but this cycle ride was a small challenge compared to the challenge people living with MND have to face.”
The team set off on 26th August and arrived on Westminster Bridge on 13th September.
